Para-post yarn is a synthetic, waterproof, and buoyant yarn, typically made from polypropylene, that is used for fly-dressing, especially for high-visibility posts on parachute dry flies. Different types exist, with variations in fiber thickness and texture, which can affect its visibility and suitability for specific applications. Its main purpose is to provide a durable, float-resistant post for flies like parachutes and emergence patterns, but it’s also used for split wings and loop wings.

Composition and types

  • Material: The most common material is polypropylene, a synthetic polymer known for being lightweight, water-resistant, and buoyant.
  • Fibers: The fibers are typically straight and have a dull or no sheen.
  • Variations: While polypropylene is standard, variations in fiber thickness, color, and processing create different product types, some more visible and stiffer than others.

Purpose and application

  • Parachute posts: The primary application is as the post on parachute dry flies, which provides high-visibility for the angler and support for the fly.
  • Other wings: It can also be used to create split wings, loop wings, and even the emerger cases on emerger patterns.
  • Floating bodies: Some patterns, particularly large insect imitations, use the floating polypropylene yarn as a body material.
  • Versatility: Because it is inexpensive and can be trimmed to any shape after tying, it is a popular and versatile material for tyers.
